There are so many different forms of art that can be appreciated besides photography. One of those art forms is carpentry. My boss, Daniel Maxam, who is the Assistant Athletic Director for Facility Management at Liberty University, is also a skilled carpenter who has just started his own business, Simply Wooden.
“I have always had a love for building since I was a child,” said Dan on his business’ Facebook page. Dan saw that there was a demand for pallet furniture, or furniture made from wood from reclaimed pallets. This furniture is unique because of its distressed look and heirloom-like appearance. Dan started to build some of this furniture and offering it on Craigslist. After some success selling his pieces on the site, he “finally started a small side business to follow [his] passion,” Simply Wooden and has expanded from only using reclaimed pallet wood to also using cedar, red oak, pressure-treated decking and reclaimed barn wood.
Today, two of my coworkers and I assisted Dan with taking apart an old barn to collect more materials for his furniture. We worked on it for 2 and a half hours and got a trailer load of wood over to his house. Hopefully we’ll get to see some of the furniture he makes with it! Some photos of the process are on the bottom and pictures of some of his work is in the slideshow gallery.
