My submission for Monochrome Monday this week is a picture of the City Hall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is currently the tallest all stone (masonic) building in the world and it is definitely a beautiful structure. I was able to take this picture a couple weeks ago when my family, Ashley, and I went to Philly for a few hours. Ashley and I were able to walk around for an hour and a half and take pictures. I really like the way the lighting worked out in this one and how well the contrast looks in monochrome as well. The original picture is included in the gallery at the end of the post.
Earlier this week, in my post about the walk Ashley and I took to take pictures around Ocean City, I posted a few pictures of the boardwalk amusement parks that were closed during the week. On Saturday, our last day in Ocean City, Ashley and I were able to visit those parks twice. First during the day and again at night. My favorite picture from during the day would probably be this one of the chair swing with the ferris wheel in the background. I like the brightness of the day and it looks like the little girl on the swing is enjoying herself.
We were also able to take a ride on the big ferris wheel and get a couple pictures of the view and enjoy our first ever ferris wheel ride together.
One of the things I most looked forward to while in Ocean City, New Jersey was watching the sunrise over the ocean. Not only was I able to see a few good sunrises I was also able to see a beautiful sunset the night before we returned to Pittsburgh. The sunrise that is in the pictures below ended up better than we expected. Because of the heavy cloud cover, we were afraid that we might not see anything, but after a little patience, the sun came up above the clouds instead of above the horizon and it looked great.
For sunset, we drove over to a pretty much random street near the Longport/Ocean City Bridge to take pictures of the sunsetting over Great Egg Harbor Bay. I hope you enjoy these scenes as much as we did when we witnessed them.
Last week’s photo of the week was a sunrise and this week’s is a sunset picture. This was taken the last night we were in Ocean City on the bayside of the island. I didn’t take many pictures with my phone in the last week so this one won the best picture I took with my phone over the week.
On Thursday, May 15th, my family, Ashley, and I went to Philadelphia. My family was excited about an event going on called the Night Market. Lots of different vendors were there serving a variety of foods. Unfortunately, Ashley and I are a little picky so we ended up finding our dinner elsewhere.
However, before the Night Market started at 6pm, Ashley and I were able to walk a few miles around the city and take some pictures. It was a really pleasant time and we enjoyed the city atmosphere as people were getting off work and the streets were also filled with school groups and other city-goers. My favorite picture from the walk was this one of the Philadelphia City Hall. The sunlight was just right to make the building look great on all sides without really dark shadows.
A little bit of a different approach for my Monochrome Monday post. This week, I’m going to be selfish and put my submission for the upcoming Monochrome Madness first, and then talk about my favorites from last week’s Monochrome Madness.
My submission for this week is a picture of my 7-year old niece Alanis. She was with us for part of our week-long vacation in Ocean City, New Jersey. I took this picture the first day we were there and I was just trying to get some decent and somewhat candid pictures of everyone and this one came out really well. My mom was actually the one who suggested I convert this specific photo into black and white and I’m really happy with how it came out.
My two favorite pictures from last week came from two bloggers I hadn’t previously looked into before and I’m happy that they submitted their pictures last week. Because I’ve been at the beach for the last week, I was a little partial to pictures taken by the water.
First, I have pkphotooftheday‘s picture entitled Foggy Morning at Lake Clear. I always seem to have a hard time getting good pictures in foggy weather and I really liked this one with the boat sitting motionless on the calm water.
My second favorite photo from last week was submitted by Tide Line Still Life. The reason why I liked this picture so much is because of the texture of the clouds along with the rays of light coming through. It really makes for a cool effect when processed in black and white.
As usual, I have some more pictures that I processed into monochrome that didn’t quite make the cut for my submission for the coming week and here they are:
Old bikes sitting at Sunset Beach.
Wonderland Pier on the Ocean City, Boardwalk. Closed during the week until Memorial Day.
Just a generic Starbucks picture. Inside was the nicest Starbucks I’ve ever visited.
On Wednesday (May 14th), Ashley and I went for a walk down the boardwalk and in Ocean City to take some pictures. Since the beach season doesn’t start until Memorial Day, it was pretty quiet around town and the rides are only open on the weekend. Here are some of the pictures I took on our walk. Later in the week I will post some pictures of the rides when they were running during the day and at night.
The view of the boardwalk from the house we rented for the week.
Walkway to the beach
One of the amusement parks on the boardwalk.
The amusement park is not open during the week until after Memorial Day.
One of the two amusement parks on the boardwalk not open until the weekend.
